Applicants are referred to the relevant sections of the University's Postgraduate Admissions website and How to apply pages.

Please DO NOT submit an application for more than one of the MPhils offered by the Faculty of Economics.

Supporting documents/information required (please follow the Postgraduate Admissions website guidelines on how to submit supporting documents):

  • Full or interim official transcript. If these are in a language other than English, a formal certified translation into English is required. Applicants who took part in Exchange Programmes MUST provide the grades achieved either by uploading the separate Transcript or ensuring that all grades are included in the main one. Applicants from North America should include with their application a GPA relating specifically to Economics and quantitative courses taken, in addition to the overall GPA.

  • Two academic references (please check University guidelines ). You should use referees who are familiar with your academic background and achievements. They should be able to place you relative to your peer group and also offer an assessment of your suitability for a taught master's degree with a high level of technical content. For example an undergraduate tutor or dissertation supervisor would be ideal. Course lecturers are significantly less likely to be able to provide useful detail on a candidate who has merely attended their lectures and so should only be used as referees if they have gone beyond such involvement. If you wish to provide an additional reference, please email us at econgrad.admit@econ.cam.ac.uk.

Note: It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that their referees submit their references by the appropriate deadline. Failure to do so will result in the automatic withdrawal of the application.

  • GRE General Test scores (if applicable). Please see more information about GREs here. Applicants are required to upload a copy of their GRE test scores or if they have not yet taken the test a document to show that they have registered to take the test. GRE scores must be received by the appropriate deadline in order for the application to be considered.

Note: Failure to do upload a GRE Test (if required) will result in the automatic withdrawal of the application.

  • Evidence of proficiency in the English language (please refer to the University Postgraduate Admissions website for further details on language conditions). The Faculty of Economics will not normally ask you to have a valid English Test in order to submit an application, however, this might be a requirement at a later stage, should you receive a conditional offer.

  • Course details to show that you meet the entry requirements outlined on the Faculty's web page. The template that MUST be used can be downloaded here.

  • Scholarship award letter (if applicable). This is not a requirement if financial support is yet to be confirmed.

  • Reasons for applying (up to 1000 characters) to be written on the Applicant Portal.

  • Career goals (up to 1000 characters) to be written on the Applicant Portal.

  • CV/Resume

The Faculty of Economics reserves the right not to consider applications which are not complete by the due date, or to consider them in their incomplete state, at its discretion.

When Will I Receive a Decision?

Applications are considered as gathered fields in December and May with a strict limit on the number of offers that can be made each year. Most decisions are expected to be sent out between January and the end of April.

Borderline applications will be put on hold, placed on a waiting list, and assessed as a gathered field in May with decisions coming out by the end of July. You will be informed via email or Applicant Portal if you fall in this category and the final decision will be reflected on your Applicant Portal.
