Conference : Inflation Targeting, Central Bank Independence and Transparency

15-16 June 2007

Cambridge

It is nearly 10 years ago that the Bank of England was granted operational independence in May 1997. Since then there have been enormous changes around the world in the conduct and transparency of monetary policy.

To analyse the research and policy challenges in inflation targeting, central bank independence and transparency, a two-day conference is organised on 15-16 June 2007 at the University of Cambridge. Three keynote speakers, Jordi Gali, Lars Svensson and Carl Walsh , have already agreed to participate.

Some of the topics that the conference shall address are:

·        How successful has inflation targeting been?

·        Does transparency contribute to more successful monetary policy?

·        Should there be more coordination between fiscal and monetary policy?

·        What is the optimal monetary policy response to large supply shocks?

·        What role should money and asset prices play in monetary policymaking?

This is an exciting opportunity to address some issues that are at the forefront of current interests of both academics and policymakers.
