Previous Academic
Performance
Applicants for direct entry to the PhD programme must have performed
well,
or expect to perform well, on a Master's programme equivalent to the
Cambridge
MPhil
Economic Research
or the MPhil
Economics. Candidates without
such a background should apply for the
MPhil
Economic Research,
from which it is possible to proceed to the PhD programme,
conditional on performance. Applicants must include in their
application
precise details of the Master's course they have taken, including the
topics
covered and the main required reading. Applicants for the PhD
who
are not considered sufficiently qualified will be referred
automatically
to the MPhil Economics Admissions Committee.
All applicants must
include a proposal setting out the research they
wish to undertake for the PhD, so that the Faculty can assess whether
there
is a suitable supervisor for the research available in Cambridge. The
Academic Staff Pages outline a broad range of their research
interests, which may provide a
suitable basis for a PhD thesis.
Short-listed applicants
for direct entry to the PhD may be invited to
visit the Faculty to meet other research staff and students and see
facilities.
This will not apply to all applicants and will be arranged on an
individual
basis.
GRE Requirements
All applicants who have neither a first degree nor a masters degree
from
a UK institution must submit the results of a recent Graduate Record
Examination
(GRE) General Test. The Faculty will not normally consider admitting a
student whose score registers below the 90th percentile in the
quantitative
section and below the 50th percentile in the analytical writing section
of the test. The Faculty must receive the results of the GRE
General
Test by the due date for complete applications (see How
and When to Apply).
Details of registration
deadlines for this test, and of opportunities
to take the computer-based test can be sought from ETS, which
administers
the test. The GRE
website can be accessed
to order publications, try out sample questions and for information
regarding
test dates and locations.
