Religion in India: Tolerance and Segregation

A new report from the Pew Research Center analyses religious change and its impact on societies around the world. The report, as part of the Pew-Templeton Global Religious Futures project, examines aspects of religion in India.

More than 70 years after India separated from colonial rule, Indians say they generally feel their country has lived up to one of its post-independence ideals: a society where followers of many religions can live and practice freely. Indians say it is important to respect all religions, however major religious groups see little in common and want to live separately.

The Pew Research Center panel of expert advisers who gave advice on all stages of this report includes Dr. Sriya Iyer, from the Faculty of Economics, and fellow of St. Catharine’s College at the University of Cambridge.
