Professor Wynne Godley:
born 2nd September 1926, died 13th May 2010.

We are sad to announce the death of Wynne Godley. Wynne was the third Director of the Department of Applied Economics from 1970 to 1986 and a professor in the Faculty from 1980. He was also a Fellow of King’s College.

His career straddled the arts, civil service and academia. Educated at Rugby and Oxford, he was a professional oboist from 1950 to 1953. He joined the Economic Section of H M Treasury in 1956 and remained there until 1970, except for a period of research with the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. From 1992 to 1995 he was a member of the Treasury’s panel of Independent Forecasters ( “The Six Wise Men”). Throughout his academic career as an economist Wynne took a leading part in public debate, both in the UK and the USA, on the conduct of macroeconomic policy.
