The 2018 edition of Cambridge Economics features, amongst many other interesting articles, an interview with alumni Angus Deaton who was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, reflections by Professor Sanjeev Goyal on his time as chair of the Faculty, and a report by Dr Matt Elliott on his latest research on Systemic Risk-shifting in Financial Networks.

Harvard University Press, the Faculty of Economics and the Cambridge-INET Institute held an event to celebrate the publication of Dr. Sriya Iyer's The Economics of Religion in India book. This year marks 20 years since the passage of the National Minimum Wage Act -- a politically controversial intervention in the British labour market at the time. Professor William Brown was centrally involved as a member of the Low Pay Commission in designing and implementing the "most successful policy of the past 30 years" ¹

Cambridge-INET is delighted to announce that Dr. Meredith Crowley will be joining as a Coordinator for the Transmission Mechanisms and Economic Policy theme, leading research on global economic policy.

Three Faculty members will be running sessions at this years Festival of Ideas. Dr. Meredith Crowley will hold a panel discussion on "Trade Wars: Deal or No Deal", Dr. William Janeway will give a talk on "Doing Capitalism in the Innovation Economy" and Tony Cockerill will host the interactive "Running the British Economy" game.

Dr. Sriya Iyer's new book "The Economics of Religion in India", published by Harvard University Press, has much to teach us about India and other pluralistic societies the world over, and about the power of economics to illuminate some of societies' deepest beliefs and dynamics.

Professor Richard Smith has been appointed Honorary Professor at UCL and has had a Special Issue of the Econometric Theory journal published in honour of his 65th birthday.

Prof. Giancarlo Corsetti was invited to join the newly created United Nations High-Level Advisory Board on Economic Social Affairs. The board held its inaugural meeting on July 9th and 10th 2018.

The Faculty is delighted to announce that the four students, who were nominated by the Faculty for an ESRC DTP Studentship, were all successful.

Dr. Tiago Cavalcanti, Dr. Meredith Crowley and Dr. Matthew Elliott have all been successful in the Faculty's Senior Academic Promotions.

Dr. Sriya Iyer recently gave the Faculty Research Seminar based on the research in her 2018 Harvard University Press book, where she uses economic methods to study religion. Her talk was titled 'The Economics of Religion in India' and delivered on 23 April 2018.

Good luck to Gustavo Nicolas Paez (Captain, PhD), Shuyi Ge (PhD), Martin Miklos (MPhil in Economics) and Daniel Mobayyen (MPhil in Economics) who will be competing in the Annual Econometric Games from 11 - 13 April in Amsterdam. They'll be hoping to unseat Harvard as last year's winners.

Dr Petra Geraats was a keynote speaker at the Central Bank Communication and Transparency Conference at the Dutch central bank (De Nederlandsche Bank) in Amsterdam on Friday 16 February 2018.
